Hurricane Harvey has done a lot of damage to the homes and lives of people living in Texas, but now that’s behind us, it’s time to start the recovery. To make the recovery run smoothly a lot of money is needed, and state funding is one of the ways this money is coming together. We’ll take a closer look at how state funding is going and which other resources there are.
The money that is needed
Estimations have been made for the damage, and the total damage for Texas has been estimated by the governor to be between $150 billion and $180 billion. There has also been estimated that the federal government would need $121 billion to rebuild all the destroyed homes and infrastructure. Unfortunately, this is such a huge sum that the leaders themselves have already admitted that they won’t be able to gather such an amount of money. So, we aren’t able to get all the money, but how much can we get?
Resources for money
The Disaster Relief Fund (DRF) is program from which the federal government gets a big part of its funds. This fund is a program that can be used for agencies to draw money from in the case of disasters.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency is a big agency as well where a lot of money comes from. The Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, has spent $1.4 billion on short-term help only for the victims, including costs for hotel rooms, local governments, and money for people who lost their houses with insurances that didn’t cover it.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is the other big pot for money for hurricane Harvey. This department has promised the government of Texas $5 billion to spend on long-term rebuilding of the infrastructure and public property.
Other resources for money after the disaster include the Small Business
Administration’s disaster relief loan program, who gave $2.4 billion worth of low-interest loans to Texans. Then there is the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s food assistance program who provide aid in the form of food assistance. The Texas Workforce Commission has provided $9.4 million worth of unemployment benefits due to hurricane Harvey.
Besides the financial aid from the state and various agencies, nonprofits have been offering a lot of help as well. The Red Cross has received $429 million worth of donations for Hurricane Harvey. This was partially spent on food, shelter and health services for the victims.
Gathering the money needed to recover from hurricane Harvey has been causing a lot of friction, firstly between the state of Texas and the national government. Namely, the state of Texas claimed that the bill they received was inadequate to which the government responded that they haven’t used their own money yet. The Red Cross has also received a lot of criticism since they apparently didn’t deliver what they promised the state of Texas. It’s to hope that in the end all of these corporations will be able to work together and smoothen the recover from Harvey
All in all, hurricane Harvey has been a devastating disaster that destroyed many houses and the lives of many people. We are now on our road of recovery and together we’ll be able to get there, with the help of the state, the government and the nonprofits.
