“Texas Series” comes to Longview’s Lear Park July 11-14

Players representing 32 baseball teams from across the state will be arriving in Longview Friday, July 10 with the hopes of leaving town the middle of the following week as state champions.

These teams will be participating in the Ranger Youth Baseball “Texas Series,” a state tournament for 14-Under baseball players Saturday through Tuesday, July 11-14, at Longview’s Lear Park Baseball Complex.
The tournament features three divisions: 14-Under, 14-Under Jr. and 13-Under. The breakdown has 14 teams competing in the 14-Under Big School division; 11 in the 14-Under Jr. division and seven squads battling for the 13-Under title.

These teams came from among 70 leagues which played this fifth season in the Ranger Youth Baseball organization for 14-Under baseball players. The late Charles Williams has served as the State Chairman and tournament director. Assuming those duties is Bruce Selph. Wesley Edge is the local chairman for Longview Boys Baseball, which is joining forces with the City of Longview Parks and Recreation Dept. to host the double-elimination affair.

Festivities kick off at 6 p.m. Friday, July 10, at Lear Park with opening ceremonies and a dedication of Lear Park Field 2 to honor Charles Williams. The participating teams will be recognized during the ceremonies and then dinner served. Local officials are offering a variety of baseball-related contests like long ball hitting, base running and around-the-horn throwing.

Tournament play gets under way Saturday, July 11, in the two 14-Under divisions and the 13-Under group. There will be 12 bracket games played Saturday in the 14-Under divisions, 12 games in both of those groups Sunday and seven bracket games both of those days in the 13-Unders.

The 14-Under Division teams include Denison, Texarkana, Atlanta, Lindale, Hallsville, Longview, Paris American, Paris National, Palestine, Athens, Splendora, Willis, Nacogdoches and Kilgore. Opening games Saturday at 8 a.m. feature Denison facing Hallsville and Texarkana meeting Paris National.

The 14-Under Jr. Division teams consist of Howe, Van Alstyne, Tri Cities, DeKalb, New Boston, Pineland, Hughes Springs, Diana, Red River, Fannin County, Fairfield and Lamar County. Saturday’s 8 a.m. opening game pits Howe against Fannin County.facebooklikelogo

The 13-Under Division squads are Kilgore, Howe, Sulphur Springs, Athens, Longview, East Montgomery County and Texarkana. Saturday’s first matchup has Howe tangling with Texarkana.
