In August of 2017, Hurricane Harvey ripped through Houston, Texas and other nearby cities. The Texas Department of Public Safety stated that about 185,000 homes sustained varying levels of damage, and about 700 businesses were significantly damaged as well.
We live and work in and around Houston, and we were heartbroken by the devastation that occurred in our city and in the homes of our neighbors. As a foundation repair company that has been around for almost 200 years, we have always been committed to serving others. After Hurricane Harvey, we knew that we had a responsibility to serve our community with our time, energy, and expertise.
How Harvey Caused Foundation Issues
It is a well-known fact that hurricanes and flooding bring a whole slew of problems when it comes to building structures. One of the most common and troublesome things that arisesafter a severe storm like Hurricane Harvey is foundation issues. The main damage comes from the fast-moving waters that result from extreme amounts of rainfall. The force of the flood waters pushes on the exterior of your home which weakens its overall structure, and it can even completely separate the home from the foundation. Flooding can also cause issues with the soil under the home’s foundation, leading to shifting and cracking of the foundation and walls of the home.
Water that is traveling at just 10 miles per hour can do as much damage as winds that are moving at 270 miles per hour. In addition to the powerfully moving water causing problems, debris and chemicals that are often in flood water can cause more harm to a foundation and the overall strength of the home’s structure as well.
Many areas affected by Hurricane Harvey received over 40 inches of rain in just four days, which resulted in over 14 trillion gallons of flood water that made its way through the city of Houston, devastating everything and anything in its path. Home and business foundations were cracked, shifted, and completely destroyed all over the area, and most homeowners didn’t have flood insurance, leaving them to clean up and repair the devastation on their own time and with their own money.
Our Foundation Repair Company Was Honored to Help
We have been in this incredible city since 1840, and we were heartbroken by the destruction that Hurricane Harvey left behind. As foundation and structural experts, we knew we had to do something. As a Houston-based company, Abry Brothers was honored to be able to help our friends and neighbors.
We were grateful to have an opportunity to serve those who had suffered from some of the most extreme damage to their homes. We spent time with more than 20 families as we helped clean up properties by clearing out trash and wreckage. We worked side by side with the families to restore their homes and attempt to bring some semblance of normal back to their lives.
In addition to helping clean up homes, we also donated our time and talent to our community by repairing cracked foundations and damaged walls that resulted from the winds and flooding. Some of the serious foundation issues that occurred would have cost homeowners between $5,000 and $10,000 to repair, and we were incredibly honored to be able to gift these repairs to them free of charge.
